Jonah and the Whale is also called Jonah and God’s Big Fish. This is a classic story that can teach kids a lot of life lessons about obedience, forgiveness, and God’s mercy.

Let’s look at the story of Jonah, a man who ran away from God but learned a lesson in the belly of a great fish!

Who Was Jonah?

Jonah was a prophet of God. He was sent to the people of Nineveh to tell them to repent of their bad behavior or they would suffer consequences. Nineveh was a large city with many people. They were not doing what God told them to do. God sent Jonah to tell them to turn from their bad behavior or else.

But Jonah didn't want to go to Nineveh. Instead of going as God told him, he ran away!

Jonah Tries to Escape

Jonah instead got on a ship that was going in the opposite direction. He thought he could get away from God but God sees everything!

Then a violent storm arose over the sea, and the sailors were afraid, and they prayed to their gods. Then they said to Jonah, "Because you are running away from God, we have sinned, and here we are. "

Jonah said to the sailors, “Throw me into the sea, and the storm will die down! ” They were a bit afraid, but when the storm became terrible, they threw Jonah into the water. Once Jonah was in the sea, the storm died down immediately!

But just when Jonah thought he was out of luck, God sent a big fish (sometimes called a whale) to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah prayed to God while in the fish, and he asked for forgiveness. He said he would obey God if he was saved. After three days God made the big fish spit Jonah out onto dry land.

Jonah Finally Goes to Nineveh

After Jonah was saved, he went to Nineveh, as God had told him to do. He told the people there to turn from their sins and to follow God. The people of Nineveh listened to Jonah, and they prayed to God to forgive them.

Because they repented, God was merciful and did not destroy the city. Jonah learned that God is loving, merciful, and ready to forgive.
